Q1. What is brown fused alumina?

Brown fused alumina is a synthetic aluminium oxide abrasive made by smelting bauxite in an electric furnace, with a dark brown colour, a Mohs hardness of 9.0 and an Al2O3 content of 92.5%–95%.

Q2. What is the difference between brown fused alumina and white fused alumina?

White fused alumina has a higher Al2O3 content (≥98%) and a higher Mohs hardness (9.5), so it is used for precision grinding. Brown fused alumina is tougher and more economical, so it is used for sandblasting, coated abrasives and resin wheels.

Q3. What grit size should I use for sandblasting?

F8–F80 is the standard range for sandblasting. Coarser grit such as F8–F24 removes rust and scale faster, while F40–F80 gives a finer surface finish.

Q4. What is the difference between F grit and P grit?

F grit is untreated Barmac sand with high packing density, intended for blasting and grinding. P grit is further calcined at 1000–1300 °C, which gives it sharper edges, higher grinding force and improved toughness and hydrophilicity, making it suitable for high-end coated abrasives.

Q5. What is the Al2O3 content of your brown fused alumina?

Our brown fused alumina contains a minimum of 92.5% Al2O3. Sandblasting grades F8–F80 reach a minimum of 95% Al2O3.

Q6. Is brown fused alumina magnetic?

No. Our brown fused alumina is magnetically separated, and the magnetic material content is kept below 0.05%. This prevents contamination of stainless steel and aluminium workpieces.

Q7. What is the bulk density of brown fused alumina?

Bulk density depends on grit size, ranging from about 2.02–2.10 g/cm3 at F12 down to 1.75–1.83 g/cm3 at F70.

Q8. Is brown fused alumina suitable for coated abrasives such as sandpaper and belts?

Yes. P series is specifically developed for coated abrasives. It is calcined at 1000–1300 °C, giving sharp grain and improved hydrophilicity for better coating adhesion.
